Hopefully the Federal Government will listen to the messages being sent in Virginia, Delaware and now Massechusetts.

This is tax payer money being handed out as Stimulus. The Feds shouldn't be picking winners and losers in this process. The money should go to the people. Cash for clunkers was the right model, why not cash for broadband. Let the people test there own ethics to see if they want to dip into the pockets of their fellow Americans and use this money or let it sit so we don't put a large burden on the tax payers.

If you dig into this stuff the money is going to large established institutions like utilities, hospitals, municipalities, private and public higher eductation.

If they are listening all current programs should be put on hold, reworked and relaunched with one goal in mind. Empower the masses, don't line the pockets of established party backers.

Anonymous - I don't think that your comments are accurate.

First off, the goal of these grants is to create infrastructure that would for the FIRST time give folks in rural hard-to-reach areas ACCESS to broadband. Just giving those folks money, without the infrastructure would be pointless because they wouldn't be able to buy either Broadband OR infrastructure. If BB service providers thought it would be profitable to build the necessary infrastructure themselves to reach these rural folks, they would have done so. The point of this project is to create incentives for companies to build the infrastructure.

Also, the government has awarded grants under these program mostly to local small businesses trying to develop a rural customer base.
